Abortion and Northern Ireland

Thank you to those who have contacted me about this - I do appreciate this is a sensitive subject with many varying views and opinions.

You may have heard the announcement by the Secretary of State for Women and Equalities, Justine Greening that the NHS will now fund abortion care in England and Wales for women resident in Northern Ireland. You can read the announcement in full here:

This access to care services has been overwhelmingly sought by women from Northern Ireland and as the NHS is free at the point of use for all in the UK, I do not think it is right that women from Northern Ireland have been historically disadvantaged in this way.

However, the Supreme Court judgement made it clear that the Government has the power to make these arrangements but this does not change the fundamental position that the Northern Ireland Executive and Northern Ireland Assembly will decide on their future policy for abortion going forward because this is a devolved issue.
